The Diffusive Gradients in Thin Films Technique (DGT) for Trace Metals versus Active Sampling
نویسندگان
چکیده
The diffusive gradient in thin films (DGT) technique is an in situ passive sampling method that is designed to accumulate labile metal species in environmental systems. DGTs were applied for the determination of time integrated concentrations of low level dissolved metals in waters in areas of ecological concern. The data revealed heavy metal contamination of waters and tracked the contamination to the source. A comparison of DGT-derived water concentrations with water concentrations measured from grab samples highlighted the effectiveness of passive water samplers for detecting ultra-trace levels of metals. Comparing active and passive sampling techniques showed that both methods produce similar results when used simultaneously at the same sites. The use of DGT technique along with traditional methods offers an extra cost effective method of independent evaluation of environmental sites as well as more sensitive and inexpensive way of obtaining additional information about sites which would be very hard to obtain using active sampling techniques.

Evaluation of Discrete and Passive Sampling (Diffusive Gradients in Thin-films – DGT) Approach for the Assessment of Trace Metal Dynamics in Marine Waters – a Case Study in a Small Harbor
Two complementary approaches, based on discrete and passive samplings (diffusive gradients in thin-films DGT), supported by the speciation modeling, were evaluated for the assessment of distribution and operational speciation of trace metals (Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu, Ni and Co) within a small marine harbor (Rijeka, Croatia). Concentrations of dissolved metals were relatively low and comparable to, or sl...
متن کاملA novel passive water sampler for in situ sampling of antibiotics.
Passive water sampling has several advantages over active methods; it provides time-integrated data, can save on time and cost compared to active methods, and yield high spatial resolution data through co-deployment of simple, cheap units. However, one problem with many sampler designs in current use is that their uptake rates for trace substances of interest are flow-rate dependent, thereby re...

Diffusive gradient in thin-films (DGT) technology was used to monitor bio-available metals and the tool was developed for risk-based pollution assessment and liability apportionment in the Witwatersrand Goldfields, South Africa, where there is widespread mine-related pollution. DGT technology is a passive sampling technique whereby metal species are selectively diffused from polluted water thro...
متن کاملAssessing bioavailable metals in effluent-affected rivers: Effect of iron and chelating agents on the distribution of metal speciation
To assess bioavailability levels and indentify important speciation for trace metals (Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb), the rivers affected by a waste water treatment plant (WWTP) was studied. Biologically available concentrations were measured by the diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) method, and DGT results were compared with those predicted by WHAM 7.0. At most sites downstream of the WWTP, bioavail...
متن کاملUncertainty Evaluation of the Diffusive Gradients in Thin Films Technique
Although the analytical performance of the diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique is well investigated, there is no systematic analysis of the DGT measurement uncertainty and its sources. In this study we determine the uncertainties of bulk DGT measurements (not considering labile complexes) and of DGT-based chemical imaging using laser ablation - inductively coupled plasma mass spec...
